June 6, 2009

My dear church family and friends,

Jenny and I began the month of June with a memorial service.  On the morning of Monday June 1st we joined Bishop
Nelson and hundreds of friends at Faith Lutheran Church in Monterey Park to say goodbye to little Enoch, son of
Pastor Luke Zhou. The last two Sundays you all prayed for them in this most difficult time of their lives.

While puzzled by the mystery of cot death and asking God many whys, we found tears streaming down our face at the
service as we watched the infant Enoch smiling, crying, and having his first haircut in video clips.  As we celebrated
his short yet happy 155 days on earth, we only found comfort in knowing each tear is a note of love rising to Heaven
and a little angel is there watching over his parents and us all.

Luke chose to have the memorial service on June 1st because it is the Children’s Day celebrated in China where he
is from.  The loss was so shocking, the service was so touching, that I was compelled to ask the old question again:
who are we, where do we come from, and where are we going to?  In the light of life and death, I cannot help but
ponder what best we can do for our children while we are all here on this side of heaven.

Jesus’ word came to mind the other day when I engaged a conservation with Ruth our Sunday school anchor: “Let
little children come to me” (Matthew 19:14).  We are blessed to have our children at our Lord’s table, partake and
share the Meal with us.  It is in the sacrament that we meet Jesus in his real presence.  This personal encounter with
the Lord shapes the Lutheran Christian identity of our children, one of the best things we can do to bless them as we
are privileged to share their life as parents, family, and church.

As I am sitting here on the Synod Assembly, I am overjoyed that a special Trust Fund has granted us $1000 for our
children’s ministry.  I praise God for this gift and thank the Synod and the Trust Fund for their generosity.  The
question is: what best can we do to love and bless our children?

Serving Christ,

Pastor Frank
