June 2, 2010

Dear Family and Friends,

Jenny and I were exceedingly delighted to hear Calvin the other day when he made a speech as Oak ASB president
to a big audience in the Temple City School District.  One thing he has quickly learned, since being elected to his
presidency, is “a few words from the president.”  Calvin is good at it: A simple line of thought and “a three-point
sermon” as I call it that could be developed and completed in a few minutes.  As usual he did a good job, smooth and
eloquent, earned a big applause, and very impressive!

Then, we rushed over to his game where he had to pitch that night, a good one against the Dodgers.  While changing
from jacket and tie to his baseball uniform on the way, Calvin was murmuring: “Dad, hustle, I’m going to be late!”
While I don’t particularly like to be hustled in driving, I also sensed this guy’s commitment to his team.  He had to be
there in good time, shape, and spirit to get his job done.  These guys count on one another in the game they love.
Some may say: “Hey, Pastor Frank, we know, from this, you gonna develop your three-point talk on team spirit, one
body and many parts, and all following the same Spirit, Lord, and God in sports, life and ministry…blah, blah, blah…”
Sounds good, but I’m not going there in this pastoral.

Instead, I think of our children in the beginning of June as it’s the International Children’s Day in China.  Yesterday
when I wished him “Happy Children’s Day,” Calvin looked a bit annoyed, “Come on, Dad, I am very happy everyday!”
Sometimes I just like that annoyance look on his face!  When I share my not so advantaged childhood and try to give
him a bit education, Calvin is receptive and usually nods his head: “Dad, I am grateful for everything I enjoy, to be in
the land flowing with milk and honey.”  Sure, he knows how to talk back to his pastor dad a lot of times when I wonder
how to talk to him.

Looking at the things he is doing at school, in sports, and at church where Calvin teams up with Issac, Joseph, Derek,
Kelvin, Ethan and Phoenix, a reality dawned on me: Calvin is right, he is happy here everyday!  I wish all our children
at Bethlehem are happy everyday.  Thinking of all the wonderful progress they each have made in different capacities
this half year, I am grateful to our children for their commitment and to all the parents and our teachers for your
dedication.  On the whole, “I have rejoiced in the way of thy testimonies, as much as in all riches” (Psalm 119:14).
“Since this pastor happens to be my dad, may I suggest that you switch back to the New Revised Standard Version?”
Ok, I have had my indulgence in the King James Version in my gospel reading through the whole Easter Cycle.  Now
is time for a change.  In the Season after Pentecost as we hope for renewal and expect many surprises of the Spirit, I
wonder what would be the next one.

In God’s grace,
Pastor Frank
