Dear Friends:

I always like 李白的送友人, and did an English translation some time ago.

I recently read this poem again, and felt that I liked it even more than 杜甫的赠卫八处士.

In this poem, words like 孤蓬, 浮云, 游子, 落日, 故人are so close to my own feeling.

When his friend was leaving, Li Bai did not directly say what was in his mind.
Instead, he ended the poem with 萧萧班马鸣. It is so cool.

I just revised my previous English translation, added a rhyme scheme.

FYI, I also copied two other versions of translation.

(701 - 762) Seeing a Friend Leaving by Li Bai

North to the city wall, the green mountains ground .

To the east, the white water flows around.

This is the place where he departs,

As a lonely weed, for a journey of ten thousand miles.

While a traveler's plan is like a cloud in drifting run,

An old friend's affection shines like a setting sun.

Waving hands as he leaves, and then

His dappled horse neighs again and again.

Seeing a Friend Off

Translation by Stephen Carlson

Green mountains range beyond the northern wall, White water rushes round the eastern town.

Right here is where, alone and restless, he Begins a journey of a thousand miles.

While travelers' intents are fleeting clouds, A friend's affection is a setting sun.

He waves good-bye, and as he goes from here, His dappled horse lets out a lonely neigh.

(Translated by Witter Bynner)

With a blue line of mountains north of the wall,

And east of the city a white curve of water,

Here you must leave me and drift away

Like a loosened water-plant hundreds of miles....

I shall think of you in a floating cloud;

So in the sunset think of me.

...We wave our hands to say good-bye,

And my horse is neighing again and again.

Hope you like it.
