There were a few deceased classmates who were my classmates in 民富國民小學. I hate to see old
friends were gone forever. It is the fact of life we all have to face it. Long time friendship is hard to find. I
called 陳茂森 after I received the '60 class directory. A lady answered the call and told me he has left the
world over 15 yrs ago. She is his widow. 陳茂森 and I lived right across from the same street in Hsinchu.
We were very good friends since I moved to Hsinchu in '47 (the second year I was in Taiwan from
Fukien, China). I felt very sad about his leaving the world. (2010/07/03)
As far as reunion in other area than SFBA, I could not commit my schedule due to the nature of my
business. If there is an escrow opened, I have to be here to baby sit it until it is closed. In May 彭義平
stayed with me for two nights, I could only take him to a local sight seeing due to an escrow to be closed
after his visit. I felt so bad to know only money not friendship. That is an agent's life. Money is my boss
and so does clients.
60th reunion is too far for me to even think about. After 911, I am very happy if I woke up every morning.
It changed the whole world. We are reaching 古來稀 age in no time. I am blessed to be here and e-mail
you.
In '65, there were three NTU CE alumni came to Cal Berkeley, I am the only survivor. Those two died
around 70 yrs old. I felt very fortune to be the only one is still alive. I am very optimistic about my life. I
worked almost over 16 hours daily and felt very energetic. Retirement is not in my dictionary like
impossible was not in Napoleon’s dictionary. (2010/07/04)
I am more white then the white guys. I spoke pretty good English as the white guys told me and wrote
better than most of them, since I have an English major daughter to tutor me. I could read, listen and
speak Chinese very well but not writing. All my thought is still in both languages except the new
vocabulary I learned here. I don't even know what they are in Chinese.
Today I spent several hrs in punching my key board and enjoyed a lot in writing. My daughter once told
me: "Dad, now I knew where is my hidden gene coming from". She loved to read and write since her
childhood. I envied her to be able to go after what she loved. We did have this luxury. (2010/07/04)
I am glad someone likes what I wrote. If I formed an e-pal club, you will be invited to join. I have to make a
living from my business now, it will be my retirement wish, i.e. to create an e-pal club. I loved to write
since I was in high school, the most enjoyable class was the Chinese composition. It was a two hour
class, I usually finished my assignment in less an hour., so I got an whole hour to fool around and
watched our classmates to scratch their head to fill the blank page. I got 84/100 for my Chinese in the
college entrance exam. 張隆志 asked me once: "If you started over, what would be your measure?" My
reply was Chinese literature without reservation.
Our generation was the sacrifice of medicine, technology and engineering tidal wave. I saw so many
talents were wasted by going this field due to social pressure and money crazy. I am one of the social
track followers, although I am not much a talent.
After 45 yrs from Taiwan, I have not written any Chinese letter for almost 45yrs except a few letter to my
dad who past away in '98, My interest in writing went into English. My Stanford U. daughter was majored
in English and now is an Assistant Professor in the American U. at DC. She tutored my English, so I got
hooked on English writing and speaking. I am a real "Banana" now, yellow outside and white inside. I
tried to keep the best of both cultures. It is my goal. (2010/07/04)
Indeed I am very proud of my daughter went after her interest not the wealth. She was in the Stanford
University in early '90's. She spent five yrs and got both B.A. and M.A. degrees. Stanford U. has no
differentiation in major ounce they admitted you. Most freshmen chose the money make field, e.g.,
medicine, high tech/engineering and law as their major. She got one track mind, i.e., English. One of my
client/friend asked me: "You spent so much money to send your daughter to Stanford and let her pick
English as her major, it is a very bad investment". My reply was: "Look at me, I am a real estate agent
after 17 yrs in engineering, because I did not like what I was doing". I encouraged my kids to go after
what their interest was not what kind career would pay better". As an Assistant Professor, she does not
get pay much and has no job security until being promoted to an Associate Professor with tenure. She
has another four yrs hard work ahead. She will be decided whether the American University at DC would
keep her. She was a news paper reporter for over 10 yrs, but the paper business is going out of tube.
One joke is:: when she was junior, she got the co-term approved. She could get her M.A. in one year
instead of two. She was very excited and broke the good news to me, I told her to get out quick, it is too
expensive to stay one more year (Ha! Ha!). During her graduation ceremony of B.A., I asked her why not
go all the way to Ph.D. Her reply was: "Dad, Ph.D. was to pursue teaching career, I hate teaching". Now
she enjoyed teaching by no other better choice. Paper business is in very bad shape due to the Internet
and PC. She preferred to be a reporter, but it would be diminished soon. Life is so hard to predict.
Chinese family in US achieved very highly in education. Almost there is at least one M.D. or Ph.D. in
every family I knew. My son would be a surgeon in two years.
I enjoyed writing so much especially the late night writing. All people were sleeping except me was
awaken. One of my NTU CE classmates asked me: "What the heck you were doing around 3 am and
writing jokes"? Most of my writing was done after midnight, I think I got the writer cramp and just could not
stop writing until the first draft was completed. Some of my clients called me after midnight. Look! It is
after midnight, I am still punching my key board. I work at home, so it is very convenient to be workaholic.
I have at least one more hour to prepare today's work, I will go to sleep. (2010/07/04)
