From: Charles Mo Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 4:03 PM To: EE Class of 1964 Subject: Dear EE64 Classmates, Our dear classmate and friend Professor Mark Chao Kuen Yang passed away yesterday. I was initially notified by our classmate Leonard SY Li this morning at home (only later realized Yang’s daughter had earlier left messages both on my phones and e-mail). Have called and talked with both Yang’s wife Sharon and daughters Jean and Grace. He died of massive aneurysm in the head, on-set Sunday morning ~7:00am and stopped breathing ~10 minutes later, life support sustained till yesterday morning. He was otherwise in good health. He saved 4 people with his immediate organ donations: kidneys, lungs, and liver. I will attend Yang’s funeral in Gainesville, Florida this Saturday and present a flower wreath in the name of our EE64 classmates (suggest that our EE64 “travel fund” expenses the flower cost and Chen H Wu mail it to me). Mark is such an nice gentleman, dear and always willing-to-help, helpful to others including of course his classmates, aside from being a scholar in mathematical statistics of US national and international recognition. He was born in Sichwan, China and grew up in Kao-Shung, southern Taiwan, is much a country boy of hearty genuineness and mild manners. Yang is one of the sharpest mind among us and is a quick study. And yet he is uncompromising for dealings in principle and stands total integrity. Yang excelled in Taida EE. He then switched to mathematical statistics and executed an outstanding professional carrier in US as a distinguished professor in the Department of Statistics, University of Florida, including many consulting and scholar-visiting positions at US schools, government agencies, and private companies and at universities in Taiwan and in China. Mark Chao Kuen Yang is a dear classmate to us all. He was in the 2007 Norway reunion cruise. He contributed/wrote on our EE64 website and often shed in-depth comment/observation in classmates-e-mail communications. To me, I had the additional privilege of working with him as our company’s consultant virtually continuously for the last ~30 years, to now. His outstanding work and devotion is such an asset and contributed greatly to many important problems’ identification, approaches, and solutions. And learning from and with Yang great enhanced my knowledge in statistics, including collaborated papers some widely deemed of landmark significance. Best regards to all. Most sincerely, Charles T. Condolence to your mother Sharon and all family members. I will attend the funeral on Saturday. Please let me know the location and time details. Please arrange a flower wreath "To Young Chao Kuen scheo-chon forever rest in peace from NTUEE64 Classmates". The EE64 class fund will do the cost represented by me when there. I will arrive at Gainesville Friday ~9:40pm, staying at the Hilton you mentioned, and would strongly like to view him one last time if totally at all feasible. Mo shu-shu and Garbo
From: Bill Lee Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 4:35 PM To: EE Class of 1964 Subject: Passing of Mark Yang, our classmate What a shock it was to all of us! I just returned from a 7-hour drive from Lafayette, where we had visited our grandson, when this sudden sad news arrived! Only a couple of weeks ago, I dialed his number a couple of times wanting to say Hello but didn't get through. Among other things, I remember vividly the days during our freshman year when Mark and I worked together as partners in Chemistry lab assignments. Our sincere condolences to Sharon and the Yang family! I have CC Yang cc'ed in this email so that he as a friend is also notified about the sad news. Respectfully, Bill and Daisy Lee
From: Cheng-I Chen Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 5:37 PM To: EE Class of 1964 Subject: Mark Chao-Kuen Yang will be missed by all EE classmates Dear Charles and EE classmates, It is a shock to learn the sad news of passing away of Mark Yang, one of our dearest classmates. He is such a nice person with good integrity and characters that we all admire. Aside from our the formal class reunion trips, we had a few chances to see him and Sharon while he was a visiting professor in Taiwan. We really like him a lots. We will all miss him as a good classmate and a good friend. His contributions to our EE blogs always provided very open minded and in depth thoughts that I enjoyed reading very much though, regrettably, I never acknowledged. Dear Charles, please convey our sincerest condolence to Sharon and the family members. Our thoughts are with them at this difficult moment. Most Sincerely, Cheng-I Chen
| From: James Liao Tuesday, October 26, 2010 4:33 PM To: EE Class of 1964 Subject: Mark Yang will be sincerely and sorely missed Dear Charles, Your email finds me in total shock and sorrow. Currently, my wife and I are traveling at Hong Kong. Mark Yang certainly will be sorely and sincerely missed by all of us. As a Christian, my prayers are with Mark's family at these most difficult times. We hope the following bible verses can offer comfort to Mark's family from our Lord: 启 示 录 21 1 我 又 看 見 一 個 新 天 新 地 ; 因 為 先 前 的 天 地 已 經 過 去 了 , 海 也 不 再 有 了 。 4 神 要 擦 去 他 們 一 切 的 眼 淚 ; 不 再 有 死 亡 , 也 不 再 有 悲 哀 、 哭 號 、 疼 痛 , 因 為 以 前 的 事 都 過 去 了 。 Sincerely, James H. I was still thinking about Mark’s email on various subjects, especially the latest on how to cope with getting old… Can someone organize a gift arrangement for us to show our appreciation of Mark? | From: Charles Mo Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 7:34 PM To: EE Class of 1964 Subject: RE: Mark Chao-Kuen Yang will be missed by all EE classmates In my e-mail, I have a storage folder of Yang, to store communications mostly on mathematical statistics including scanned hand writtings which we do not bother to type into word or latex equations, and a little other exchanges. It just dawned on me. I will never receive anything from him again. Mo |
From: Wei Chen Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 7:49 PM To: EE Class of 1964 Subject: RE: Mark Yang will be sincerely and sorely missed Dear Classmates, It is hard to accept that Mark is gone. Mark was such a genuine and wonderful thinker, now we have one less true intellect in this world. Wei
From: Ching Chun Han Date: Tuesday, October 26, 2010 8:12 PM To: EE Class of 1964 Subject: RE: Mark Yang will be sincerely and sorely missed Dear classmates and Charles Mo: This sad news would be the hardest and most difficult for all of us to accept. We lost an outstanding and passionate and sincere classmate for good! Only a few months ago I received Mark, Sharon, Jean and his grand children in my Palo Alto office. We dimed ,walked and talked so happily together. Mark seemed to be very very healthy and in good shape. I can only say life is fragile and let's do together with anything possible to help and support Mark's family to go through this difficult time. Warmly, Ching Chun Han
